FeatureRule
Length (hairline to chin)At most 1.25 × cheekbone width
CheekbonesThe widest part of the face
Jaw widthAt least 0.8 × cheekbone width
Jaw cornersSoft, rounded

Lengths run from hairline to chin; widths are compared with the cheekbones. These are the detector’s current rules (version shape-0.1), tuned as more annotated photos are tested. A face near a boundary is shown as “Between X and Y”.

Round face shape: curves instead of corners

A round face shape is about as wide as it is long, with curved lines all the way around. The cheekbones are the widest point, but not by much: the forehead and jaw are a little narrower, with the jaw at least about 0.8 times the cheekbone width. The jaw corners are soft rather than angular, and the chin is rounded. Measured from hairline to chin, the length is at most about 1.25 times the width across the cheekbones.

Whether you search for a round face or a round shaped face, the label describes proportions and nothing more. Because the outline is mostly curves, styling advice for it centers on adding length and a few straight lines.

Checking the jaw corners and the length

A tape measure and a mirror settle most cases.

  1. Measure your face length from the center of the hairline to the bottom of the chin.
  2. Measure your cheekbone width across the widest part of the cheekbones, just below the outer corners of the eyes.
  3. Measure your jaw width from one jaw corner, just below the ear, to the other, and your forehead width at the brow line.
  4. In the mirror, trace your jawline from the ear toward the chin. On a round face it curves smoothly, with no clear corner.

If the length is at most about 1.25 times the cheekbone width, the cheekbones measure widest and the jaw is close behind, the numbers point to a round face shape.

The face shape detector does the same from a selfie: it maps 478 landmark points in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device. Because its face mesh starts at the top of the visible forehead instead of the hairline, the tool estimates the hairline before calling the shape. The length ÷ width figure in the free result is the raw on-screen ratio, so it reads lower than a tape measure would. The rules are early and still being tuned on annotated test photos, and a face near a boundary gets a "Between X and Y" result.

Round vs square vs oval

  • Round vs square comes down mostly to the jaw corners. Both shapes are short relative to their width, but a square face shape has a jaw about as wide as the cheekbones that turns a defined angle below each ear. On a round face, that area is one continuous curve.
  • Round vs oval comes down to length. An oval face shape has similar soft curves but is about 1.3 to 1.5 times as long as it is wide, and its jaw narrows more toward the chin.

If your forehead is wide but your jaw narrows to a small, pointed chin, compare with the heart-shaped face page as well.

Hairstyles for a round face shape: height and length

Nearly every recommendation for a round face shape follows one principle: add vertical lines and straight edges to an outline built from curves.

Height at the crown. A side part with crown volume, a high ponytail, a quiff, a faux hawk or a textured crop with height adds length above the forehead. Keep the sides close so the height isn't matched by width; an undercut with a longer top does exactly that.

Length past the chin, never at it. Long layers that fall below the chin, straight long hair and an asymmetric lob that is longer at the front draw the eye down. A chin-length blunt bob does the opposite, adding width right where the face is widest.

An angle across the forehead. Side-swept bangs cut a diagonal line, while full rounded bangs repeat the circle.

Also skip volume at cheek level, such as tight curls around the cheeks, and short cuts with no lift, like a flat buzz cut or a bowl cut.

Women's hairstyles. Long layers are the easiest starting point: ask for the first layer to begin below the chin, so the shortest pieces never sit at the widest part of the face, and let the ends fall past the collarbone. A side part with crown volume adds height where it helps on a round face shape; switching the part to the side you don't usually wear it on gives a quick lift at the root, and a round brush at the crown while blow-drying does the rest. An asymmetric lob suits anyone who wants hair off the shoulders: the longer front pieces keep a downward angle beside the cheeks, and a little texture spray stops the ends from curling under into a rounded line. Side-swept bangs pair well with any of these, and a high ponytail or straight long hair is the low-effort option for busy mornings. The thread running through all of them is where the fullness sits: above the forehead or below the chin, never level with the cheeks. Curly hair follows the same rule, with layers that keep the volume at the crown and length that falls below the jaw.

Men's hairstyles. Short cuts for a round face shape share one recipe: tight sides and a taller top. A textured crop with height follows it with a little matte paste worked upward, and a side part with volume follows it more formally, with the hair blow-dried up at the part before it is combed across. A quiff puts the height at the front, right above the forehead, where the added length shows most. An undercut with a longer top takes that contrast furthest, and a faux hawk gathers the height along the center line. For a neater look, slicked short back and sides brushes the top up and back. If you are growing your hair out, let the top lengthen first and keep the sides trimmed while it comes in, so the outline gains height before it gains width.

Beards can add length as well. A goatee with some length, a beard kept longer at the chin and shorter at the cheeks, or stubble with crisp, defined lines draws the outline downward or adds angles. Glasses and accessories for a round face shape

On a round face shape, frames with straight lines give the clearest contrast. Rectangular frames that are wider than they are tall, cat-eye frames and browline frames all add structure; small round and oversized round frames repeat the curve. A frame about as wide as your face at the temples lets those lines read clearly without adding width. The guide to glasses for round face shapes goes further into lens height, bridge fit and sunglasses.

A V-neck, a deep scoop or an open point collar opens the neckline and draws a vertical line. A high crew neck repeats the round outline, and a boat neck adds width. Long drops, linear bars and angular geometric earrings lengthen or add angles, while round hoops and large round studs echo the cheeks. For hats, a high-crown fedora or a structured cap adds height and a straight line; a round bucket hat adds width.

With makeup, shade the temples, under the cheekbones and along the jawline to add angles, and highlight a vertical line through the center of the forehead and chin.

Photo habits that make a face read rounder

Several everyday photo habits push a face toward round. A chin tucked down shortens the visible face. A wide smile lifts and widens the cheeks. Hair falling over the jaw covers the corners that separate round from square, and a phone held close distorts the proportions. For the scan, set the camera about 1 m (3 ft) away at eye level, face it straight on with a neutral expression and pull your hair back from your forehead and jaw.

Everyday photos are different, because there you are choosing an angle rather than measuring. Shooting slightly above eye level, lifting your chin a little and turning a few degrees off center all show more of the jawline and lengthen the visible face.
