How the free hairstyle try on works

The free hairstyle try-on at the top of this page shows a new haircut on your own face before you commit to it. You take a live selfie, pick a hairstyle chosen for your face shape, and an image model redraws your hair, with instructions to leave the rest of the photo alone. Step by step:

  1. Sign in. Your try-ons and results belong to your account, and only you can see them.
  2. Agree once. A one-time consent screen asks you to confirm that you are 18 or older, that the selfie will be of you, and that you agree to send it to the image model. We keep a record of that agreement, and you can withdraw it at any time.
  3. Take a live selfie. The try-on opens your camera and has no upload button, because it is meant for your own face.
  4. Get your face shape. It is detected on your device by the same detector behind our free face shape detector. Nothing is sent at this step.
  5. Choose a hairstyle. First come the hairstyles recommended for your face shape, taken from the same style library as the paid report, then the full catalog of more than 40 reviewed hairstyles.
  6. See the result. Your selfie and the chosen hairstyle's fixed instructions go to the image model, and the new look appears in roughly 10 to 30 seconds.

There is no text box for writing your own prompt. Every hairstyle is a reviewed template with fixed wording, and every template tells the model to change the hair and nothing else: your face, expression, skin, glasses, clothes, light and background should stay as they were. That makes two results easy to compare, because the haircut is meant to be the only difference between them.

Haircuts picked for your face shape

Search for "try hairstyle on" or "best haircut for my face" and you will find endless photos of cuts on other people. What those photos cannot show is how a cut sits on your outline. A haircut changes where the eye reads width and length, so the chin-length bob that balances a long face adds width to a round one. That is why the free hairstyle try-on finds your face shape first and lists the hairstyles that balance it before anything else.

The thinking behind the picks for each shape:

  • Round: height on top and length past the chin, such as long layers or a textured crop with height. Cuts that end right at the chin add width where the face is already widest.
  • Oval: most lengths work, from a pixie cut to long layers. The main things to skip are heavy blunt bangs and flat sides that hide the cheekbones.
  • Square: soft layers that fall past the jaw, loose waves and curtain bangs, all of which round off the corners. A blunt bob that stops at the jaw repeats its line.
  • Oblong: width at the sides and a fringe, such as a chin-length bob or curtain bangs, with no extra height on top.
  • Heart: fullness at the jaw and a fringe over part of the forehead, as in a chin-length bob with side-swept bangs.
  • Diamond: a fringe to widen the forehead and fullness at the jaw, with the sides kept soft at cheekbone level.
  • Triangle: volume at the crown and temples, with ends that stop above or below the jaw rather than on it.

Each shape has a full guide with women's and men's hairstyles, glasses and more, including the oval face shape, round face shape and square face shape pages. The face shapes overview compares all seven side by side.

The recommendations are a starting point, not a limit. Beyond them, the full catalog covers short, medium, long and tied-up hairstyles, for women, men or anyone. If you already have a cut in mind, go straight to it. The picks for your face shape simply save you from scrolling when you are not sure where to begin.

AI hairstyle try on tips for a realistic result

The image model can only work with what your selfie shows, so a little setup before you take it goes a long way:

  • Face the camera straight on, at eye level. A tilted head or a phone held low changes how your hairline and jaw sit in the frame.
  • Use soft, even light from the front. Facing a window works well. Strong light from one side leaves shadows the model has to paint around.
  • Pick a plain background. A new hairstyle blends more cleanly against a bare wall than against a busy room.
  • Keep your hair off your face if you can. Tie long hair back or tuck it behind your ears, and take off any hat.
  • Relax your expression. A neutral face keeps your forehead, jaw and hairline easy to read.
  • Hold the phone at arm's length. Your whole head and some of your neck should be in the frame, so a longer hairstyle has room to fall.

Glasses are fine, but they stay in the picture, because the model is told to leave them as they are. If you would rather see the hairstyle without them, take them off before the selfie.

What a free hairstyle try on can and cannot show

A virtual hairstyle try-on is a preview, not a promise. It is good at shape and length: where a lob ends against your jaw, how curtain bangs frame your forehead, how much height a textured crop adds. It knows much less about the hair you actually have, and a few things can turn out differently after a real cut:

  • Texture and density. The model cannot tell how fine, thick, straight or curly your hair is, so it draws a typical version of the hairstyle.
  • Hairline and cowlicks. A real cut has to work with where your hair grows, and a cowlick at the crown or along the fringe can change how a style sits.
  • How the cut falls. Weight, layering and daily styling shape a haircut from the first wash, and the model can also shift small details of the photo as it redraws your hair.
  • Color. Hair color changes are not offered. Each hairstyle is about cut, length and shape.

So the best way to use the free hairstyle try-on is side by side. Try two or three shapes or lengths, compare them, and bring your favorite to your appointment along with the hairstyle's name. A stylist can then tell you how that cut would work with your texture, your hairline and the time you want to spend styling it each morning.

Privacy: what happens to your selfie

Your face shape is worked out on your device, and your selfie stays there until you choose a hairstyle. At that point the free hairstyle try-on sends it once, over HTTPS, to our image provider, fal.ai, which runs the FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] image model with the provider's request storage turned off.

  • Your selfie. We do not save it on our servers, and it is gone within 24 hours at the latest.
  • Your results. The provider's copy of the finished image expires within an hour. Ours is kept in private storage for 30 days, visible only to you, and then deleted automatically. You can delete one result, or all of them, at any time.
  • The label. Every result carries a visible "AI-generated" label, on screen and on downloads.
  • What we never do. We never use your photos or results in marketing, and we never use them to train models.

The provider's safety check is always on. For the rest of how your data is handled, see the privacy policy.

What it costs

Your first try-on is free once you sign in. After that, a pack of 20 try-ons costs $4.99. It is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and the credits last 12 months, so you can come back to them the next time you are thinking about a new cut. Each try-on uses one credit, and if a generation fails or the safety check blocks it, the credit goes back to your account automatically.

If you are not sure how to use your free hairstyle try-on, start with one of the styles recommended for your face shape, since those were chosen to balance your outline.
